Research activities

Balbir's current research interests include:聽

  • Methodologies and software tools for defining Digital Twins and Socio-technical Digital Twins;
  • 聽Languages and Modelling for Agent-based Adaptive Systems;聽
  • Conceptual Modelling as Research Method for Inter-disciplinary domains: Surveillance, Cyber-crime and theory building.
  • Value sensitive design and Model Driven Software Engineering;
  • Digital Twin research is being done with TCS Research Labs, and has led to a modelling language and technology and an impact case study on DTs.


    Current Teaching

    Balbir has developed multiple modules and programmes in computer science, primarily in the area of model driven software engineering.聽

    Completed PhDs have covered topics in Enterprise Architecture, Modelling Languages, Simulation, and the history of computing.聽


    Biography

    Professor聽Balbir聽Barn聽is professor of聽Software聽Engineering and is the Academic Dean for the Faculty of Science and Technology. He has held various senior higher educa颅tion roles, including as Associate Dean for Business in the former School of Engineering and Information Science and Head of Department at the University of West London. In these roles,聽Balbir聽has led on curriculum design/delivery, quality assurance of education, advancing technology enhanced learning in the curriculum and leading on developing capacity in re颅search infrastructure. Through collaborations with the universities of Southampton and Royal Holloway,聽Balbir聽pioneered the use of mobile technology for practice-based learning in social work and nursing. 聽T

    Balbir聽has an international reputation in software engineering and has extensive commercial research experience working on model driven software engineering in research centres at Texas Instruments and Sterling Software as well as leading on funded academic research (over 拢2.5 million). He has also provided consultancy to prestigious clients such as JP Mor颅gan Chase and JISC.聽聽

    Balbir鈥檚 work is multi-disciplinary and he is working with criminologists and sociologists in applying technology to tackle social challenges such as surveillance and cyber-crime and in social media research. 聽The recently completed MAYOT (Mobile Apps for Youth Offending Teams) project is being evaluated by several youth offending services in Wales and England. 聽Balbir聽has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers in leading interna颅tional conferences and journals.聽

    Since 2012, Balbir has been collaborating with 聽TCS Research India to develop key advances in Digital Twin technology. His research in Digital Twins is recognised through research, consultancy (with the UK Home Office) and several keynote presentations at leading international conference in software engineering.
